

Desulphurisation by injection is a very effective way of producing ultra low sulphur steels, and of modifying the shape of the remaining sulphides.
Freeboard requirements are not particularly critical, and standard ladles can be used.
Temperature losses are not excessive
In the
existing procedure sulphur is removed in steel making in BOF or Twin Hearth
by adding fluxes. In this method the refining time is quite long. Further,
iron loss occurs due to reblowing, which oxidizes Fe to FeO going into the
slag. The quality of hot metal is also affected.
· Lance life of above 10 heats has been achieved
by using indigenously developed castables.
· The degree of desulphurisation by injecting
5-8 kg/THM different reagents for 8-15 minutes is shown
in the tables given below:

Desulphurisation lances are custom made to size and refactory thickness. The usual Dimenssions are:
1. Outer Refactory Diameter:
100mm
2. Pipe: 32mm OD
3. Metal Flange: 180mm x 10mm
4. Threading: One end std BSP
5. Length: 2500mm.
Packing: 6 nos packed in a wooden Box.
